The Great Wall of China literally "The long wall of 10,000 Li is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built, rebuilt and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from Xiongnu attacks during various successive dynasties. Since the 5th century BC, several walls have been built that were referred to as the Great Wall.
The most comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has recently concluded that the entire Great Wall, with all of its branches, stretches for 5,500 miles.
We visited 2 segments.
Jinshanling section of the Great Wall of China. Built from 1570 during the Ming Dynasty.
10.5km long with 5 passes, 67 towers and 2 beacon towers.
I think we covered over 30 of the towers in 4 hours. Some of areas were in better condition than others and ranges from flat to extremely steep.
The initial section of the wall has been restored to original condition, but the condition of the wall deteriorates towards the natural state as it approaches Simatai.
Mostly the pictures speak for themselves.
Amazing!
This is where we ate our lunch.
This is after 4 hours of hiking. |
The next section of The Wall (Mutianyu) was a little easier ascent. |
Getting down the mountain via toboggan. |
A bit of Kung Fu action on The Wall |
And the descent was even easier. |

Oh my word! What an incredible experience for all of you. One the girls will never forget. Though I am pretty sure I'd be scared out of my whits to walk on parts of the Wall .. :)
Augie thinks the toboggan looks dangerous (I think it looks like a blast!!) and we both love the pictures. Wish we could have been there with you.
I am so envious! That and the terracotta warriors were the two places I wanted to go, but we didn't get to. I am so glad you were able to share that with your family. What an amazing experience! Thanks for sharing your pictures. Someone 'has the eye for photography'! Great job!
